I didn't realize it this morning but today would turn out to be just that. One of those days. Today was supposed to be the day I made up for the speed workout I missed on Tuesday. Life happens but I always like to make up for missed mileage! I was also excited to take these new babies for their first spin!
I had plans during the morning but I was going to hit the treadmill either this afternoon during naptime or tonight after the kids went to bed. My best friend (and fellow boymom) and I wanted to take the kids to the beach for one last hurrah before the weather changes and the boys had a blast.
Needless to say we stayed a bit longer than planned and so that naptime run didn't really fit in anymore. No problem, there was still tonight, right?
Enter Facebook and its darn "Bidding Wars" pages. We'll be moving soon so I'm trying to sell all kinds of stuff and one lovely lady wanted to come pick up her toddler slide early this evening. Hmm, guess I'll just run a bit later then, right?
While getting the kids bathed and ready for bed the nagging in my back that's been bugging me all week got to be really bad. I always have pain in my back but by bed time I could barely bend at the waist. Not good for a planned speed workout! I decided to rest for a bit and see if my lower back would relax enough to run. Still time, right?
Enter the Lego. Yup, the Lego piece that put the nail in the coffin and ruined my run tonight. My youngest managed to find and conceal a tiny piece of Lego which he somehow decided would be the perfect thing to put in his nose after reading stories. Not cool. When I went to check on him and see why he was upset I could see the Lego sticking out of his nose and the poor little guy had scratched the inside of his nose trying to get it out. Lego in a nose is scary enough for a parent but mix a little blood in there and I kinda panicked! Hospital here we come!
Luckily the piece was right at the entrance to his nostril so with the promise of a freezie he let me flick it out. Phew. Even with freezie administered and hospital trip avoided I was pretty frazzled and sadly realized my run just wasn't meant to happen. Sigh.
As a mom I know from experience and wholeheartedly believe that sometimes life gets in the way of training. What's important though is being able to make up for those times and get in every mile even if your schedule has to be changed around to make it happen. I've always been able to do that and tonight I feel bad that I failed at it.
Maybe I should have gotten up early this morning to run instead, or maybe I should have just ignored my back pain, loaded up on meds and hit the treadmill. Or better yet, maybe I should have scooped up the boys and run to the hospital tonight instead of extracting the Lego myself to make up those missed miles!
Maybe not. But maybe I should have tried harder to fit it in despite the scheduling conflicts, nasal emergency and horrible back pain? We all have busy lives full of surprises and things that inevitably get in the way of our training plans. Thats part of what makes training for a marathon difficult. Its nor just a physical challenge but a scheduling one too! I try so hard not to let that be an excuse but tonight the score was clearly Life: 1, Running: 0.
Looking forward to starting fresh in the morning...and hiding all of our Lego. :)
