You see, the treadmill is pushed right up to a blank wall right now and that makes for a pretty boring run. During the day I can look out the window but at night I like to draw all the blinds so my evening runs out there are pretty blank and solitary. I still have those creepy windows at my back but thankfully the temperatures are pretty cool and comfy in the garage so even though I like a hat to keep my ears warm, I can at least still wear shorts on the bottom.
And when I get really bored I can always take a quick break for a few selfies of what I'm wearing...
Anyhow, I had a 6 km tempo run on the schedule for yesterday but I just couldn't bear a third garage run in a row. My Tues and Wed runs just weren't any fun so I decided to postpone that tempo run until this morning when the boys were at school and I could run outside.
Holy cow, what a difference being on the road makes!
I had to drop some stuff off at my parents house so I decided to run from there. It was neat running through the neighbourhood I grew up in. I wasn't into running before I left home so I didn't really know that neighbourhood on foot, just from driving and playing as a little kid. It was fun running past old friends' houses and my elementary school etc.
My favourite part of the run was behind the school where there's a small park on the edge of the school yard and one short little trail. It was such a nice little break from the neighbourhood that I toured through there about 4 times as I looped my way up to 6 km.
|It's a small trail but it felt like a whole|
different world in there...
I enjoyed this morning's run more than most of my runs in the last while. Don't get me wrong, my runs in Maui were awesome but they felt more like jogging in comparison. Today I felt like I was actually running. And it was kinda hard. And that's okay.
I managed to keep my pace under 6:00 min/km which hasn't been my comfortable pace lately. I have a bit of work before this pace feels natural again but it was a good run this morning and I'm owing it all to a change of scenery.

I love my treadmill and many of the miles on the roads to my marathons and ultras have been paved on the treadmill but dang it's nice to get outside when the dreadmill just isn't doing it for you. I am thankful that I have a few hours a few days a week while the boys are in school this year that I can count on for running. Today it was just what I needed.
Tomorrow I'm off to the 5Peaks Ugly Christmas Sweater Holiday Trail Run (try saying that 5 times fast!) and my pile of clothes for the race looks like the Christmas aisle at the dollar store exploded on my floor. I likely won't be the ugliest sweater there but I'm kind of excited to get tacky and sweaty on the trails for yet another change of scenery.
I promise I'll post pics of the latest getup to get into my running costume lineup...
